BIG, FAT AND SCARY
I was really hoping to see some lizards when we went to Bangkoks green lung, the Lumpini Park. I had read that a few years ago there were so many monitor lizards in the park that hundreds were catched and transported to other places in order to decrease the population. To my joy some of them were still there enjoying an easy life.
Lumpini park is a big green area in the Sathorn district, and it's easily reached by skytrain or metro. If you visit in the morning you can participate in morning yoga, or then you can simply walk around looking at the people, the flowers and the lizards while enjoying the fresh air and listening to birdsong instead of the continuous noise from the traffic.
I was really exited when we spotted the first monitor lizard sleeping on the lakeshore, enjoying the sunshine. But when we walked further I realised that there were a lot of them, and that you could spot them everywhere, at least close to the water. We saw both big and small ones, and they did not really care about the people walking by.
The park had an artificial lake where you could rent paddle boats and buy fishfood. We went for a ride and of course my boyfriend headed straight for the sleeping lizards on the lakeside, trying to get as close as possible. In my head I saw a picture of a frightened lizard jumping into our litte paddle boat, so of course I started paddling backwards. The episode did turn out okay though, no lizards decided to enter the paddle boat and I did not end the day in the water. It was a fun thing to try.
The park has benches and places where you can eat your picnic food, or just chill.
Lumpini park is quite big so you can definitely wander around in peace, read a book or do some yoga, and if it wasn't for the skyscrapers towering above the trees you could almost forget that you are in this big metropol.
Here you'll find some of my other posts about Bangkok.
